Sunnah on the seventh day of a newborn

Samurah narrated that Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said, “The boy is mortgaged by his Aqiqa; slaughtering should be done for him on the seventh day, he should be given a name and his head should be shaved.”

(Hadith No. 1522, Chapters on Sacrifice, Jami’ At-Tirmidhi, Vol. 3)

When Balqis was still in my tummy, after the 7th month or so, husband and I had some discussions on what to name him/her (we didn't know if she was a boy or a girl yet), when should we have her aqiqah - on the seventh day or wait longer so we could have a proper majlis, and so on and so forth. But every discussions ended up with no conclusion.

Due to not wanting to know if I was carrying a girl or a boy, we had to at least list down few boy and few girl names. And man that was not easy. We've been checking good names for babies from books to websites to phone apps (yes, there are many!). And even though I had this (I think) motherly instinct that I was having a baby girl inside, my list of name are full with only boy names. Husband was not much a help as he also did not have any preference on naming our kids. But both of us agree on one thing - we want single name only.

So every other day it was like, "So apa nama anak kita?" then we both laughed. And no further discussion pfftt.

7 days old no-name baby girl

After she was finally born, husband and I started to short-listed the choice of names - which were actually the only 2 names we could come up with hahaha!

And on the sixth day, the night before we supposed to name her, only then we had decided that we would name her Balqis. And on the seventh day of her birth, husband officially registered her birth with Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara in Seberang Perai and we announced the name to family members later in the evening.

Mummy daddy hope you like the name we gave you, baby girl. <3

Now I wonder if my mum and the in laws and the aunties uncles cousins thought we didn't tell them Balqis' name sooner just because we wanted to keep it a secret. No we didn't!

Balqis' aqiqah was done on her seventh day as well. We finally decided to go on with the plan as we should follow the sunnah first, rather to wait and have a special event after I finished my confinement. Events can wait. There will be birthdays or any other celebrations insyaAllah. But sunnah on the seventh day comes only once and we didn't want to miss the only chance for our little princess.

There's a place in Kulim that do aqiqah. Husband went there alone to witness the slaughtering. The slaughter place do not do catering but the owner suggested a good caterer in Kulim. Because the seventh day fell on a Tuesday, they helped us to keep the meat until they cook it on Friday. We invited some close family, friends and neighbours on the Saturday for a simple makan-makan to share the meat of the sacrifice.

Balqis' hair was shaved by her own dad. I'm so proud of you sayang! Even though husband was one time okay I'll do it - then no I think I'm afraid that I'll hurt her, he finally decided that he wanted to shave his first daughter's hair on his own. It took hours to finish! Anyhow, Alhamdulillah I'm so happy that he decided that he would do it and happy to see him shaving Balqis' hair. Walaupun nampak garis-garis pelik on Balqis' head hahaha!

Mummy's botak girl!!

As new parents, we had tried to fulfil some of the sunnah of receiving a newborn as it was our responsibility and hopefully our ibadah was accepted by Allah. We also hope that by putting the sunnah first will be a first single step for us to teach and lead Balqis to worship Allah, be a responsible Muslim and a good daughter.

I remember that I heard a tazkirah of the story where Umar Al-Khattab R.A listed the responsibility of parents towards their children, according to Nabi Muhammad s.a.w. Before we expect our kids to fulfil their responsibilities towards us, we should first do and fulfil what was told and taught by Rasulullah in receiving and raising our kids. I'll try to find and listen to the tazkirah again and hopefully can share with you insyaAllah. It was indeed a good tazkirah by Ustaz Badli Shah.
