Managing my Emotions Better with Nonviolent Communication (NVC)

I attended a talk called Jom Jemput Kebahagiaan the other day at Open House Play Centre, Bukit Mertajam, Penang. Not that I am not bahagia, but this talk is actually about how to manage your emotions with Nonviolent Communication (NVC) by founder of Nouri Wellness, Dr Izam Suziani.

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) also known as Compassionate Communication might be new in Malaysia but it's already a well known communication technique world wide. NVC is an approach to nonviolent living developed by Dr Marshall Rosenberg in the 1960s. Its tools are used to regulate emotions, being empathy, express and hear ourselves - taking into considerations on FEELINGS and NEEDS - with no judgment, assumption or blaming.

As you know, anyone - being a mother, an employee, a businesswoman, a housewife - we deal with mixed emotions daily.

I actually followed (and be friend with) Dr Izam Suziani since my babywearing days. And we ended up being in the same essential oil support group.

I've been reading Dr Izam Suziani and some friends' sharing on how nonviolent communication had helped them a lot in facing crisis, from big ones or even as small as daily issues. But I was kind of skeptical in believing if it really works. Nonetheless I want to know more.

During the session yesterday, I learned a lot on how to express my feeling and find out exactly what I need. Truth be told, before this, when asked about how I feel my vocabulary  is limited to just sad, happy, angry, stress, excited - but FEELING is actually more than that.




I know realise that sometimes I was not just feeling sad, I was actually tired, or ashamed, or helpless.

And I know that might need support, and self acceptance, and closure.

I need to practice to down-regulate my emotions with these feelings and needs card. And other thing that I learned during the class.

I got to practice a bit during the session and it already work like magic. I felt relieved from some certain issue that's been bothering me for quite a long time. But I definitely have bigger issues that I need to overcome over time.

I hope I could react better to my emotions when facing anything that could triggered me or makes me feel down with this NVC tools.

I am glad that I went to the class although I was skeptical at first. And I hope that Dr Izam Suziani would come back for more sessions cos I want to know more!

  1. betul tu...jadi perempuan ni (isteri,ibu,anak, pekerja, businesswoman etc) mcm2 situasi berlaku boleh effect pada emosi. lain peranan, lain tekanannya. apa2 pun tekanan tu semua mesti disalur keluar dgn cara yg betul supaya emosi lebih tenang untuk hadapi masa2 akan datang..

    memang kelas dengan ilmu macam ini, digalakkan untuk join. untuk kebaikan individu juga..

  2. Bagus kelas macam ni diadakan dan perlu diadakan untuk semua. Kesedaran tentang emosi perlu di perluaskan untuk mereka lebih faham cara- cara untuk atasi sekiranya mengalami gangguan..zaman sekarang ramai yang mengalami tekanan x kira anak kecil atau dewasa

  3. it's not easy ~ I got into postpartum depression for 3 years , and now my husband want a divorce with me . And it's not easy to be a single mom. I always wanted to join all these classes. Thanks for sharing

  6. Nice sharing..bukan senang nk brmain ngn emosi nie..kang tetibe kita ngis sorg2 org igt kita apa plak kan..bgus ade klas mcm nie..sekurg2 nya ada cara mcm mana nk atasi masalah emosi nie..emosi nie pn satu gangguan juga tau sebenarny..

  7. Kadang kala bila nak luah sesuatu yang terbuku di hati pada seseorang, rasa was-was pun ada, tak percaya pun ada. Lepas tu, kita sendiri tak tahu cara nak redakan emosi yang pelbagai kan... Bagus sangat ada kelas macam ni

  10. Bagus ada workshop macam ni. Boleh ajar cara kawal emosi. Sometimes ada masalah kita takleh share ngan sesiapa. So workshop camni dapat membantu kita

A good program indeed... setuju sangat tentang peri pentingnya mengetahui bahawasanya kawalan emosi memang sangat penting... kadangkala orang yang sangat cool pun bila dah bertubi-tubi kna macam-macam akan breakdown juga... thus, this workshop is a good platform for us to learn on how to handle our emotions... #thestruggleisreal

  14. satu program yang sangat bermanfaat. emosi sememangnya perlu dikawal dengan baik, sebab tu rasanya semua orang kena tau cara mengawal emosi. terima kasih atas perkongsian ya. ;)

  19. right, we are dealing with a lot of things in a day. too many emotions involved and sometimes, we might cant control it. glad that there's a way to manage those bad emotions with these nvc method
